Owner and Developer Jonathan Liebmann and his wife Lauren move into their penthouse here at Main Street Life. Two crazy swiss artists build an incredible art piece on the roof of the building, and the days are fill with other events, and performances. Fashion designers Black Coffee meet with Jonathan to start planning their hotel room design for the 12 Decades Johannesburg Art Hotel. And lastly, GQ magazine pop in for a visit. phew!
So yesterday was an interesting morning. the always stylish men’s magazine GQ came over to do a story on both myself, and owner and developer Jonathan Liebmann (pictured above). This picture might just be one of my favorites so far. Whats really cool about this picture is that it was taken inside Jonathan and Lauren’s new penthouse here in Main Street Life. The’ve been living here for a couple of nights now, so I’ve now got some company, and people to join me on my missions around town.
The other thing that makes the photograph great is that in the foreground is photographer Warren van Rensburg. Just after this session, I met with Bradley Kirshenbaum from Love Jozi and photographer Ross Garrett. Now, out a of a small group of what one could consider the best commercial photographers operating today, these two gentlemen are placed very firmly in that group.
Next week the Love Jozi team are gonna use Main Street Life as the location to photograph their latest range. The theme of Love Jozi’s latest range is The City Boy Range. So myself, Jonathan, and my main man Andile from DOPE Store are going to be some of the models in the shoot, along with other guys living in the CBD. When not having to execute my looks, best believe im gonna be documenting the whole day.
What a crazy past few weeks, so great to see the different uses of the building. Love how one week we got this whole hip hop scene one day, and then some bad ass rockers the next. Just to give you an idea what we’re dealing with, Maraza’s track One Foot in The Game debuted at 10 on the urban/ international chart on YFM and last I heard, it hit the number 2 spot on the hot 99 chart. Also indi rockers Voodoo Child have been nominated for Best Rock Act at this years SAMA awards, so we wish them the best of luck.
Having these events have been a great way to show off the building, and many of the cast and crew have taken the next step towards being able to wake up every day here in Main Street Life, and live this Maboneng Lifestyle.
The entrance lobby to Main Street Life is NOT going to just be a dull passage with a security guard and a pot plant.
The Lobby passage is in fact going to be a gallery space curated by Maboneng’s very own Seippel Gallery. And without wasting any time developer Jonathan Liebmann has personally commissioned german artists Detlef hartung and Georg Trenz to produce the first work that will be on display for the launch of the building.
The artists are world renowned for what they call Licht Raum Sprache. basically, the medium involves the projection of words in spaces and on buildings throughout the world. Detlef Hartung hs just spent the past week in Johannesburg, testing in the space, and planning the peice. Above is photo I took when i joined him on one of his tests. Below is an example of their work.
So I was faced with an interesting problem that needed solving. How could I show Mpho, an eager buyer from London, the awesomeness that was Main Street Life. I wonder whether something like this has ever been done before?
