From the start of the Main Street Life project, property development company Propertuity had many boxes to tick. They had created a list of amazing spaces and facilities that Main Street Life would offer. Upon accepted my job of having to tell Joburg about these amazing facilities, I will be honest in telling you that i only suspected 80% of them to come true. This wasn’t to say I never distrusted owner and developer Jonathan Liebmann, I just wanted to be realistic and tell myself things change and often we cant always get what we hope for.

Although largely spearheaded by my need to get my drum kit in there, Propertuity have been able to tick off one of the last boxes in their large list. The development company have achieved almost everything they set out to build and create. We eagerly await the pool on the roof, but the boxing gym, members only roof top bar, exhibition spaces, and all the other on the list, have all been ticked!

The band rehearsal space is now a reality. Although a paint job and accoustic treatment are needed, the space was ready for Blk Jks to rehearse for their show at The Bioscope on the 30th Oct.

When you have Thandiswa Mazwai pulling in for a session with Blk Jks, you know something is working, you know something amazing is gonna happen here!

The roof top bar

The roof space of Main Street Life is nearing completion. With now only a couple of weeks to go, we were able to test it out for the birthday of one of the building’s investors. The event was a success, and with it came a whole new era for the building. As we stood there looking out over the event, with the city as the backdrop, we knew things have now just got a notch better. There is no more imagination needed for the roof space, things are being laid out and built.

The pool, the boxing gym, the braais, the sun shine, the good times. Im looking forward to showing everyone out there in internet land what space will be like when completed.

For now, hang tight.

TONIK! silent gigs at The Bioscope

The Bioscope were proud to host two shows by Cape Town based ambient instrumentalist duo TONIK. The show itself is labelled as a “silent gig”, a term literally trademarked in South Africa by the group. They are in possession of 70 wireless headphones, and a set up that has what they’re playing, sent out to the audience in a crystal clear signal. The result is a show like no other, when even the slightest tinkle or ping is heard as if Ronan the percussionist is sitting right next to you playing the triangle.

Propertuity’s owner and developer Jonathan Liebmann was in the audience on the friday night show, and has insisted that when the group return, a performance on Main Street Life’s now infamous roof top.

These guys deserve a big mention. These guys were the first to pick a unit here in Main Street Life back in February. Aatish and Faeeza are now comfortably settled up in their penthouse. They have been apart of the events and development from the begining, and its very excitement and passion that has made Main Street Life one of the most talked about properties to be developed in the last few years. Aatish is all about gadgets and technology, and Faaeza is all about fashion. The two are the first I call when we plan a mystery screening down at The Bioscope, because I know if usually something they are gonna love.

On the whole, its just such a great pleasure to have them and their energy in the building!

Elle Decor spread

In the August edition of Elle Magazine, a 10 page spread was shot on Main Street Life. Since hitting the shelves, the exposure has been great. Added to this, all residents who had invested, were hellava chuffed to see their home in the pages in such a classy mag.

Main Street Life is very proud to have Anisa in our ever growing community. She’s about to reside on the nearly completed fashion floor. We cant wait to have her use all the facilities in the building. Anisa has set up the well revered label Loin Cloth and Ashes, and will use her unit here in Main Street Life as both a live space and work space.

She is actually the first resident to have one of our unique conversion units. Two singles that were taken back to back, and where a section of the diving wall was removed in order to have her move between spaces. Propertuity are working closely with the building’s architects Daffonccio and Associates to get the unit just right for someone in her position. She is taking the one half as a live space, and the other will be the new workspace of Loin Cloth and Ashes.

Uniquely positioned on the Fashion Floor, Anisa can book out the workshop spaces for when a big order comes in, and book out the exhibition spaces to present to clients, sell work, and hold exhibitions. All of this, for good old fashioned mahala! thats right, people often forget that these facilities are free to be used by residents.

I would like you to meet Eric

Every now and again, you meet someone amazing. Someone who, although only having known a short period of time, feels like a life long friend. Eric, has that charm. It feels like he’ been with us for years, watching us grow up, and being there to see the building develop into something truly great.

Eric came at a time when much explaining needed to be done. People are still learning what is where, and what is what. He’s there with a smile, and he’s there with a wisdom and dignity I discover everyday. Shake his hand, talk to him, listen to him talk.

Last bit of construction

We down to the final push now people. Like all construction sites, we were met with our fair share of delays and issues. But saying all that, the building is so close to being finished. Cant believe I was once the only one living here, up in my show space castle. Some of the coolest people in Joburg are now living with me and their stories and adventures are going to be documented right here on Main Street Life .TV

At the time of eventually getting round to publishing these pictures, the roof already looks incredibly different. We already have an amazing art installation, a roof over the boxing gym, and gravel walkways throughout the roof.

All of this should be ready within a month of publishing this. Just in time for summer.

Just thought I’d share this image with you. I took on my way back from The Troyeville Hotel. Apart from some colour tweaks, this is exactly what the sunshine was doing to the Main Street Life sign. We had actually walked to The Troyeville, so it was a pretty big occasion. It was very similar to the time a few of us walked to Ghandi Square, or to The Top of The Cartlon. We actually have that city life, the one we dreamed of where we can walk about…we just didn’t know it.
